GENEGLACE, a major supplier of flake ice machines and related equipment, has supplied an Alaskan co-operative with a new plant.
Alaska's Coastal Villages Seafood (CVS) is the processing company of Coastal Village Region Fund (CVRF), a co-operative of 20 fishing villages along the Kuskokwim river, in the heart of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.
CVS operates wild salmon and wild halibut plants in five coastal village communities. In 2000, the newest halibut plant opened in Chefornak ; joining Toksook Bay, Tununak, and Mekoryuk. A halibut operation was also added to the plant in Quinhagak.
Last year, CVS purchased a new Geneglace ice plant :a 20,000 lb (9 tonne)/24 h self contained Ice Pack 340. It was not the enterprise's first Geneglace, as a 20,000lb/24h ice generator from the beginning of the eighties is still around and giving its fair share of labour, but the Ice Pack 340 was the first new ice making purchased by the community in years.
The new ice maker was warmly received by the local fishermen, who report that 'the flakes are very thick and very large ; they cool down the fish very quickly'. The technician in charge of maintenance is amazed at how well the old Geneglace runs after a simple maintenance operation and in such extreme weather.
Kelly Welch, the manager of salmon operations at the Quinhagak plant, talks about the wild salmon resources in the Kuskokwin river, and the importance of preserving thse 'jewels's.

Alaskan ice installation
Ice generators, such as this F600
model, are at the heart of the
Geneglace technology
Last season, more than 3.5 million lb (1588 tonnes) of wild king salmong, coho or sockeye, fresh or frozen, ended up in the kitchens of the finest restaurants in the USA and abroad. There is no room for bad icing which would lead to a disastrous spoilage, says Welch. Also, the fishing season, which runs from mid-June to September, is so short that any breakdown of the ice-maker would lead to substantial and irrecoverable losses. |
Now, less than one year after the installation of the first Ice Pack 340. CVS has ordered three more of the same model and a double Pack 380, which are being delivered and installed in the villages of Tuntutuliak, Good News Bay, Eek and Napakiak.
A Geneglace Ice Pack ready-to-run self-contained ice-plant is the ideal means of cooling in remote areas, claims the manufacturer. It is easy to transport because of its compact size, and it is easy to connect to a power generator when no other power is available.
Geneglace Ice-Packs are said to run smoothly and effortlessly in the toughest of environments, be they very cold like Alaska or very warm and humid as in the tropics.
CVRF is one of six western Alaska groups guaranteed a share of the rich Bering Sea fishery through the unique Community Development Quota programme, which encourages its community of 8000 fishermens and their families to harvest responsibly for sustainable well managed seafood resources for many years to come.
