Specialists in
exotic seafood

Over the next four pages, European Fish Trader
takes a look at the lastest development within the ice making and
refrigeration sector.  Reporting from Iceland by ALAN MacASKILL

ESTABLISHED in 1991, New England Seafood International has grown to become one of the UK's largest importers and processors of fresh, exotic seafood. From its purpose-built processing facility in south London, it supplies a variety of primary and added value products to major supermarkets, wholesalers, restaurants and airlines.
Product is sourced from over 40 countries and potential new suppliers are constantly under review for top-quality fresh and frozen fish including crustacea and shellfish.
The company has recently doubled its capacity for flake ice production now provided by two Pack 12 Geneglace flake-ice generators.
One or both machines are in use during the six days of production each
week. The flake-ice falls from the two Geneglace flake-ice generators into bins and is then taken to the preparation and processing areas which are maintained throughout at 5°C.
New England Seafood International has always combined stringent temperature control standards with attention to presentation and appearance of delivered product. Pictures show tuna and sea bass being hand packed with Geneglace flake-ice for London delivery. This maintains product at 0°C to 2°C through to the end user.
Product manager Terry Walden says : "We have been using Geneglace equipment since the early days, and brought our first machine here when we moved to our new purpose built factory four years ago. With significantly increased production we needed more ice.I have always been pleased with the consistency and handling quality of the
flake-ice and the overall reliability of the equipment - se we did not need to consider alternatives before doubling up on our capacity with Geneglace machines.".
Geneglace flake-ice has a large surface area and is subcooled to 220°F/-6°C. Consequently, it has a high heat absorption capacity and a large heat exchange surface area for rapid cooling.
The slow melting rate not only maintains temperature but also helps to sustain the appearance of fish with clear eyes and smooth sking. There is little risk of dehydration if refrigeration is used alone.
As well as processing applications, Geneglace equipment is used worldwide throughout the fish food chain, from fish farms and on-board ice generators, major ports and markets to retail display.
Installations range from those with an output of over 40 tonnes down to 180kg per 24 hours.
